When we step into a warm bath or shower, our focus is generally in the task at hand. In general, most people do not take the time to appreciate the reason we are able to have hot water! Without things like hot water heaters, however; we would be taking freezing cold showers and ice baths- and that is no one’s picnic!
Hot water heaters are an essential part of our modern homes. There was time though when hot water heaters either didn’t exist or were considered a luxury. It is strange to think of a time when a hot shower was not readily available, but it was not all that long ago. Nowadays, most people only think of their hot water heaters when it breaks!
For that reason, and many others, it’s a good idea to have some basic knowledge of how your hot water heater works. Things like its location, and main components, should be general knowledge to every homeowner (or renter for that matter!)
Bathroom Plumbing
To get a sense of your hot water heater, it’s a good idea to have some basic knowledge of your bathroom plumbing. For the most part, everything is connected; from your tub and sink, to your pipes, faucets and drains.
Your hot water heater comes into play by providing hot water to your faucets. Generally speaking, your hot water heater will be located in your basement. The hot water heater works by pulling in cold water from the outside, heating it, and pushing it through your pipes.
The dip tube is what is used to pull in the cold water. The cold water is deposited at the bottom of the tank (there are tankless hot water heaters, but they are less common and higher in energy costs). The bottom of the tank is where the heating mechanism is located. As the cold water is heated it rises to the top of the tank. It is then pushed through your pipes to your bathroom fixtures.
Mobile Homes and Hot Water Heaters
For every home, regardless of size, there is a hot water heater for your needs. Though they might be slightly different than a standard hot water heater, there is always an option for your comfort. A great example of this is a mobile home hot water heater.
Mobile homes generally don’t have basements, so the hot water heater will be located elsewhere. This can be a water closet on the exterior of the home, or even inside the master bedroom closet. There are also a few other differences:
- Comes with a secure strap kit.
- Has interchangeable gas and propane outlets.
- Cold water intake is on the side and the hot water outlet is on the top.
Unfortunately, mobile home hot water heaters can be more complicated than a standard one. Therefore they are more expensive to replace and repair.
This is why it’s so important to get professional assistance with a mobile home hot water heater; or any hot water heater for that matter!
